DOMINIQUE ANSEL BAKERY

On Thursday, I had planned to go to Dominique Ansel Bakery in Soho. Apparently the bakery is famous for something called the Cronut, which is effectively a croissant in the shape of a donut with different flavoured icing on top. However that wasn’t the reason I wanted to go. (Good job too, as they sell out apparently really quickly and there is a designated Cronut queue every morning that starts before 8am, according to a sign in the bakery.)

The reason I wanted to go, was because of a video I had seen of a “Blooming Hot Chocolate”. Basically a hot chocolate with a posh marshmallow in the shape of a flower held together with white chocolate. Once the chocolate melts, the flower “blooms”. Sorry to disappoint, but they had “sold out” of hot chocolate, and were brewing some more that could take up to 1-2 hours. I know I queued for half an hour + for cookie dough, but I wasn’t that fussed on a posh flower marshmallow.

Fear not, as there were some other interesting things on the menu that I was really interested to try. First of all, the bakery sell something called a cookie shot. Which is a cookie molded into the shape of a shot glass, filled with milk. cookie-shot

You have to drink it fast as the milk does eventually start to seep through and the cookie does get a bit soggy, obviously.

I don’t know why but I was expecting hot milk. But it was just cold milk in a hot cookie shot. It was very tasty and bizarre at the same time, but I did really enjoy it.

The next thing I wanted to try was a Frozen S’more. It’s pretty self explanatory, but the inside is ice cream covered in chocolate and what americans call Graham Crackers, then covered in marshmallow. Which is blowtorched for the melted s’more effect.

It was gooey, hot, cold, sweet, chocolatey goodness on a stick. It’s messy to eat, but so delicious.

The final thing I tried was something called a Cannelé. The lady who served me told me that it was effectively Creme Brule but in cake form.

creme-brule.jpg It had a dark caramel outer, followed by the cake and then inside it was custard. It was really delicious, but I have a feeling that these things would be AMAZING fresh from the oven, which mine wasn’t.

I was really impressed with the bakery’s effort to put a bit of a spin on things. However if you’re looking to try a Cronut, be sure to get there early.

  1. We love his cannele! If you like out-of-the-oven desserts, you should really check out Dominique Ansel Kitchen instead. They also have killer ice cream in the summer 😉
